Find That Film: Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Listen Later

Episode seven (season two) is an odd duck. Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a charming movie wrapped up in a comic book version of Street Fighter which prevents the average viewer from noticing it. If you’re not a slacker, a music enthusiast, a hipster, an arcade master, a comic book aficionado, a Canadian, or Michael Cera‘s mom, you may have missed this one.

Edgar Wright brings every nuance, plus a few personal flairs, of Bryan Lee O’Malley‘s creation to the big screen. Scott Pilgrim (Cera) has no life. He’s an adult who doesn’t really want to grow up despite wanting to be an adult. Classic stuff, really. His roommate (Kieran Culkin), sister (Anna Kendrick), band, girlfriend of sorts (Ellen Wong), and love interest (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) all work to encourage him to make a decision. This new love comes with a cabal of former flames sworn to prevent her from dating. Since Scott is frozen in a holding pattern, he makes an easy target for the League of Evil Exes while on his journey of self.

Wright and his team managed to get every bit of casting correct. The members of his band Sex Bob-omb are spot on, particularly Kim (Alison Pill). Brie Larson is amazing. Enjoy watching Captain America and Superman beat the crap out of Michael Cera until he tricks them to death…So, all the battles are to the death. Standard video game rules apply. You can probably see where you might have skipped this one. Don’t skip it again.
