Listen Later

This week in the Dads Toolbox we are bringing you Mark Goblowsky who is an Air Force veteran, career martial arts professional, entrepreneur, podcaster and author of the new book, Strength Through The Struggle (release date June 2017).  He is on a mission to help others overcome the obstacles in their life based on his own life experiences. He experienced abuse, violence and abandonment when he was a young child. His biggest challenge came 11 years ago when his 3 1/2 yr. old son was a victim of a hit-and-run collision with two semi-trucks, leaving him with a Traumatic Brain Injury. Mark Goblowsky believes the capacity of the human spirit is powerful enough to overcome any challenge in life. He’s here to help others discover not just how, but that they too have what it takes.

In addition to being a wonderful father to his son. Mark Goblowsky has also implemented a complete character system with weekly messages to thousands of kids through his Martial Arts programs.  He truly is an inspiring person!

Part of his life he never wanted to be a father. He grew up in a family that was not happy or functional. As he got older, he did have the chance to have a child 16 years ago. His son was a happy, healthy child. Mark was excited to help his child to grow older and become a man. When he was 3 1/2 yrs. old his son was a victim of a hit-and-run collision with two semi-trucks, leaving him with a Traumatic Brain Injury.

Mark Goblowsky lived with his son for four months while he was in the hospital. He found that this was uncharted territory and he realized that he needed to maintain hope even though the external circumstances pulled him in the other direction. The root of his book is to give hope to others.

4 steps to maintain hope
when hope is disappearing I am living in the past or I am thinking about and living in the future

* H – Here and Now – Live in the hear and now – bring yourself back to the present moment and reset
* O – Opportunity – Look at this as an opportunity and not as a challenge or a burden. Maybe it is an opportunity to discover people or other opportunities
* P – Perseverance – You have to keep pushing forward regardless of the circumstances. This could be an opportunity for you to
* E – Enthusiasm – Add enthusiasm to whatever you are doing as this acts as a multiplier to those around you.

The biggest change for Mark Goblowsky was to become the 24-hour caregiver for his child. He wanted to show up and be there for his son 100% of the time. Mark Goblowsky found that he failed to ask for help when he really needed it. He learned that when you turn this help down, you will not allow others to show up in the ways that they are hoping to show up for you. You have to find balance and take care of yourself. You also have to understand that you are human and be ok with not being perfect.

There are times now when Mark Goblowsky is scared for the future. He is scared for his son and scared that people will take advantage of him. The ultimate truth is that Mark believes his son has a lot to offer this world. He hopes for his son to find love, to find work and a purpose in his life. Mark also stated that he will do everything in his power to facilitate this to assist his son through all of these experiences and figure it out along the way.
