Members Reviews:
Great content, but somewhat repetitive
This book is a MUST READ for any business owner who wants to ultimately leave on his or her own terms. It clearly positions the benefits of doing so - not as a desire to "get out" - but as a way to fulfill your life dreams beyond business. Much of the book leads you through the process of gaining a better understanding of your own passions outside of business, and how they may actually provide an even greater satisfaction than leading your business has.
It is NOT a "how to" on the transactional activities required to enhance your business' value; but it may be of even more importance as it deals with the emotional aspects of leaving it.
My only critique is that it is presented in a manner that is quite repetitive. But maybe that's what it takes to break through the strong emotional attachments to one's business.
A critical yet often-ignored piece of the business exit puzzle
When it comes time for a business owner to think about selling, or otherwise exiting their business, they are typically asked to consider three questions: when they want to leave, how much they would like to receive and who they think should own the business after they have left. "Finding Your New Owner" asks owners another often-ignored yet critically important question: what will you do with your life next?
From a business broker's perspective, I see more deals fall apart over "soft" issues like the ones addressed in this book than over technicalities pertaining to due diligence and deal structure. If an owner does not take the time to prepare emotionally for what may very well be one of the most significant transitions of their adult life, then it can be hard to commit to the process and see it through to a positive outcome. As this book points out, owners who ignore the emotional aspects of exiting often end up sabotaging the entire process, perhaps without even understanding why.
"Finding Your New Owner" helps business owners change the way they think about their business - and their life - as they prepare to let go and move on. The book is a great tool for both owners and their advisors to illustrate the fact that exiting a business is both an intellectual and emotional process. Sorting out the issues surrounding what comes next can help ensure a successful exit that is also free of what the author accurately refers to as PTSD (post-transaction stress disorder).
While the book is geared towards Baby Boomer business owners, I would recommend it for any business owner who still calls the business their "baby," as well as advisors.
Great guide
I have been helping business owners sell their companies for 20 years, and I wish I had discovered Jack Beauregard's Finding Your New Owner earlier. This is a clear, accurate description of the "before, during and after" of the exit process.
