Holcomb Valley, California, US – On February 18, 2026, at 4:08 p.m., a camper became stranded in Holcomb Valley after more than three feet of snow fell, blocking travel near the Pacific Crest Trail.

The camper, prepared with food, water, and supplies for several days, was unable to move through the deep snow. Accompanying him was his dog, “Mud.”

San Bernardino County Fire Department crews deployed Snowcat 96 from Fawnskin to reach the stranded pair. The team navigated several miles into the backcountry and safely extracted both the camper and his dog.

SBCoFD praised the successful operation and highlighted the teamwork that made the rescue possible.
