Fire has a complicated position in the Australian psyche - from the terror of last summer's fires, as a symbol of climate inaction, to its traditional use by First Nations Australians to care for Country. Reporter Stephanie Barker stood beyond the flames on a beach in December and knew these were the worst fires she had ever seen.
