Recounts the terrifying experience of a fire lookout tower ranger stationed in a remote wilderness during a harsh winter. The narrator describes the isolation of his post and the odd behavior of his long-time colleague, Ezekiel, who has been stationed there indefinitely. During a whiteout, the ranger investigates a wounded animal and is attacked by a shapeshifting creature, a horrifying hybrid of man, deer, and bear. He flees to Ezekiel’s tower, only to discover that Ezekiel is prepared with occult items and weapons. Together, they confront and ultimately defeat the creature using a magical mirror and a crossbow, revealing that the ranger has been drawn into Ezekiel’s plan to hunt this supernatural entity.
