First British-Indian teen to swim the English Channel - Prisha Tapre

Listen Later

In the UK, 1 in 6 young people struggle with

mental health — and academic pressure is a major driver. As 11+, GCSEs and
A-Levels take over, students are often told to drop sports and “focus.”

But evidence says otherwise.

A 2021 Journal of School Health study found that teens who stay physically active during exams perform better, stress less, and feel more emotionally balanced.

Still, many young athletes are benched during exam time.

This episode follows the powerful story of 16-year-old Prisha — the first British Asian girl to swim the English Channel while preparing for her GCSEs. But it’s not just about the feat. It’s about how sport can anchor teens through stress — and how the quiet support of one coach can shape a life.

Her open water coach, Jeremy Irvine, trained her not for a fee, but for a purpose. Because someone once did that for him.

This episode is a celebration of resilience, the power of giving without asking, and the kind of kindness that builds futures.
