For the year 2020, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) recorded 194 violent deaths in Nigeria’s Southeast region. That’s for all of 2020. In just the first three months of 2021, CFR has recorded 224 violent deaths in the Southeast. At last 30 of those violent deaths were members of Nigeria’s security forces (e.g., police, military).
And all signs indicate that the situation may get worse before it gets better. On Easter Monday, the 5th of April, the Nigerian Correctional Services said that so-called hoodlums “broke into” the correctional center in Owerri, the Imo state capital and freed over 1,800 inmates.
