  • Ben Johnstone: The Epitome of Fit Beyond 40

At 39, Ben Johnstone stepped on the scales at 102.9kg and realised something had to change.

What followed is a remarkable example of what Fit Beyond 40 can look like.

Ben lost 25kg, ran his first marathon just after turning 40, went on to complete Ironman events, qualify for the Boston Marathon and earn a place at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships.

But this conversation is about much more than finish lines and race times. Ben shares the mindset shift that started it all, the power of small goals, building momentum and why fitness now means being capable of saying yes to whatever comes next.

As host, Troy Tindill, shares in the episode, Ben’s transformation is one of the stories that helped inspire the idea for the Fit Beyond 40 podcast.

  • Carlie McBurnie: Rediscovering the Competitor Within Us

Fitness has always been part of Carlie McBurnie’s life. A competitive gymnast growing up, she remained active through adulthood, although for many years training was simply something she just did, rather than having something meaningful to work towards.

In her 40s, that started to change. Training became more purposeful, the competitive side began to re-emerge and approaching 45, Carlie decided she wanted to see what she was still capable of. That eventually led her to competing in HYROX events and with that, learning to run - something she had always said she hated.

Carlie shares how her recent journey took her to a new level of fitness, before a significant stress fracture forced her to step away from training and confront the challenge of starting again.

We talk about the mindset and uncertainty that comes with injury, limiting beliefs around age and performance, the importance of community and consistency and why fitness means much more to Carlie now than ever before.

A story about rediscovering your competitive side, navigating setbacks and continuing to explore what you’re capable of beyond 40.

  • Noel Micallef: Getting Better with Age

Noel Micallef didn’t become a marathon runner overnight.

After periods of running, injury and years of stopping and starting, Noel reached a point in his 40's where fitness became something more permanent. Running shifted from something he did for an event to something that became part of who he is.

Thirteen marathons later, Noel has taken an hour off his first marathon time, from 4:44 to a recent personal best of 3:45.

In this episode, we talk about that journey: the lessons from a brutal first marathon, finding consistency, the impact of coaching, overcoming limiting beliefs and why, at 51, Noel feels he’s still getting better.

It’s more than a conversation about running - it's about what can happen when you keep showing up and remain curious about what you’re capable of beyond 40.
