Hello and welcome to our Christmas edition of Five in the Eye! This is me – Michael Ohajuru – welcoming you to episode 0390 of our weekly news review here on Colourful.
PHIL
And this is Phil Woodford joining Michael via Zoom and revealing that this week we’re going to take the opportunity to look back at some of the big themes of the year. Starting with British politics and the state of the Tory government in a year which has brought us three Prime Ministers and four Chancellors!
MICHAEL
And for story number two, we’ll ask whether some of the big issues that were obsessing us last year still matter at the end of this one. Can I mention the ‘B’ word? Brexit! And the ‘C’ word? Don’t worry, I mean Covid!
PHIL
And for our third story, we look internationally. The Democrats did better than expected in the midterm elections, but the long-term prospects for the States seem bleak. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine continues. And China flexes its international muscles. Where’s the world headed in 2023?
MICHAEL
At number four, it’s the climate. We had a baking hot summer. with temperatures climbing over 40 degrees. Recently, we’ve felt the icy chill of a Scandinavian winter. The weather seems to be becoming more extreme. So should we embrace the protesters from Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion.
PHIL
And finally, this week, to wrap up the show, sport. Our football correspondent Anthony is back for some brief reflection on last week’s FA Cup.
