Fixing a Problem Industry with Shannon Lohr of Factory45
Shannon Lohr graduated from college with a journalism degree, so how did she end up in the fashion industry? The year was 2008, the year of the financial crisis, and no one was hiring. Shannon decided she would spend the next year traveling as a bartender until the job market picked back up. Two years later, Shannon arrived back in the US and received an email from someone she had met on her travels. The sender told Shannon she should forgo a “real” job and they should start a business together. Shannon and her business partner met up in Central America to research what it would take to start a fashion brand. What Shannon found was that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting and detrimental.
From polluting waterways with dyes to not paying workers a living wage, Shannon knew this needed to change. Her research turned to what it would take to start a sustainable and ethical fashion brand. After two years she was able to successfully launch a profitable brand. Having found all the problems and made all the mistakes, Shannon wanted to open the doors for others to achieve the same outcome without all the hassle. After hearing from countless manufacturers and suppliers that aspiring designers would come to them with no idea what they were doing, Shannon decided a fashion business school was the way to go. Thus, in 2014 Factory45 was founded. Shannon now works with idea-ready entrepreneurs to launch fashion brands that are sustainably and ethically made.
