We all know how losing weight works. Consume fewer calories than you burn — that’s it. But the reality of it is much different. Losing and maintaining your weight isn’t as easy as it sounds.
But what if there was a special diet plan created just for you?
Personal trainer and fitness blogger Jonathan Jordan joins Just Ask David to explain what “flexible dieting” is and what other tools are available to help you lose weight. Jonathan is also nutrition coach, focusing on sustainable health habits. (So forget ever yo-yo dieting again!)
What is Flexible Dieting?
When it comes to weight loss, it seems like some of us struggle more than others. Why? Diets are not a one-size-fits-all deal. Although we’re all human, we all have different lifestyles, eating habits, body types, and more.
“Nutrition is simple and complex,” Jonathan says. “Unfortunately, the world we live in, with stress levels being really, really high, people having hormonal issues, having medical issues — it’s not always that simple.”
So what can we do to start a diet that’s more suited to our needs?
“I typically try to recommend to clients what we call, ‘flexible dieting,’” Jonathan says. “And that’s simply looking at your body type right now… what your current activity level is like… and then helping them calculate what their daily caloric needs are, and even breaking those calories down into what is the ideal number of grams of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats you should be eating a day, and then helping them pick a lifestyle and a general way of eating.”
Use Fitness Tools to Better Record Your Fitness Goals
So once you’ve figured out what your caloric needs are, how do you figure out what you should be eating? Luckily, there are hundreds of calorie-counting tools available to help you on your weight loss journey. (Check out the fitness tool featured on Jonathan’s website!)
BY recording everything you eat on your fitness tracker, you’re holding yourself accountable for the things you eat and can see where to make room for improvement. Jonathan also recommends the free app, MyFitness Pal. “You just enter in the food you eat on a daily basis… [and] compare it to what your ideals are,” he adds. “You can come up with creative ways to bridge that gap.”
