The year was 1945, five Avenger torpedo bombers, known collectively as Flight 19, took off on a routine training mission. Led by Lieutenant Charles C. Taylor, tasked with completing a navigation and bombing exercise, they were to fly east to before heading back to the airfield. The entire mission should have lasted just over two hours, but Flight 19 never returned.
