When the Earth was created, water was the only thing at first. It hadn't rained on the earth before Noah's time. The fountains of the deep broke up, water came from under the ground too. When the rocks and such fell from all that, that is what created the layers of the earth. The water that went up far in the atmosphere, froze, and came down which gave us the ice age.
