It is so easy for us as believers to slip into autopilot and just go through the motions.

We show up on Sunday, carry a big two-pound leather Bible, and check off our daily app devotions, thinking we are in a great spot.

That's not the way it works! God doesn't care about the surface things; He is looking straight at what drives your heart.

Here's the thing: when life is relatively peaceful and prosperous, we tend to relax spiritually. That is the exact trap the Northern Kingdom of Israel fell into during the days of Hosea, and it is the same trap the Pharisees fell into when Jesus walked the earth. Look around at all the modern conveniences we enjoy today—if we aren't careful to examine and guard our hearts, we will repeat the exact same pattern when things get tough.

Some battles don't make sense until you realize who you're actually fighting. If the same struggle keeps wearing you down and nothing you try seems to touch it, this one is for you.

Most of us want Jesus and a backup plan. We follow Him on Sunday morning, then live by our own rules the other six days and hope it all balances out.

Legend says Hernán Cortés burned his ships in 1519 so nobody could turn back. A farmer named Elisha did something like it with his oxen, and Jesus asked ordinary people for the same kind of discipleship. It sounds hard because it is hard.
