How is a workshop different from teaching a class?

We spend a little bit more time together and everybody is already passionate. So you are meeting these people from walks of life and they are all extremely passionate about ceramics.

Why is focusing on workshops important for you?

I guess because I am not the teacher… the master is coming in and that is extra learning that I get to do and be part of and bring other people into.

How far in advance are you planning your workshops?

I am very free flowing. Basically I tell people who reach out to me (for doing a workshop) that I am extremely flexible, so I ask them what works for them and I’ll make it work.

Once you have a workshop on the books, how far in advance are you letting the world know that it is available?

The second I get it locked in I let the world know. So with my animal workshop, that is a good six months or so. It’s great to have lots of time to fill the spots.

Do you have a time in the process when the advertising gets more intensive? Like in your January class I see that you already are posting about it on Instagram.

I would be ramping it up in December if there are any spots left by then.

I noticed that you said If there are any spots left. Do you have any limits as to how many people can join the workshop?

With a master class, yes. There is always a limit of 12

How much prep do you have to put in to putting on a workshop? You have already done all the advertising and it is now the week before… how much time do you put in at that point?

Every moment of every day. Look, before Moon Dabang came I was spending two weeks preparing. Not so much preparing for him, but because I am a messy person, I should have had my studio a bit tighter. I want to present my studio as beautiful as possible. So if I wasn’t so messy, but I am, but otherwise probably 4 or 5 days would have been enough.

How do you close out a workshop so people know it is over, but they also leave excited?

I feel like it ends naturally. I don’t think I have to do anything. During the event I have my host hat on and by the end it just naturally closes. People are bonded and friends and they know they can come back. It is an unspoken welcome feeling I suppose.
