Soul is a musical genre originally from the United States that combines elements of gospel and rhythm and blues.1 According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Soul is a type of "music that grew out of the experience of the Afro-descendant community In America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky and secular declaration. "2 The catchy rhythms, accented by palms and spontaneous body movements, are an important element of soul. Other features are the call and response between the soloist and the choir, and a particularly tense vocal sound. The genre also occasionally uses improvised additions, turns, and auxiliary sounds.1
