Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season are coming up in just a couple of weeks. But today, I’m going to explain to you why I’m not participating. And we’ll consider whether or not this is an unbiblical practice that contradicts the words of Jesus, or if it’s just an optional thing that Christians are not obligated to observe.

Life doesn’t always make sense. But in the end, when we see the big picture, we realize every step was necessary—and the story we see in John 9 is proof of that. Because there was a man born blind. But his blindness wasn’t a result of his sin or his parents’ sin—it was so that the power of God would be shown through Him. So in today’s Bible study, we’ll see Jesus giving sight to the blind and what practical takeaways we can apply to our lives.

In John 8, the scribes and Pharisees bring a woman to Jesus who had been caught in the act of adultery. And according to the Old Testament law, this woman should’ve been stoned for her sin. So they ask Jesus the loaded question—“What do you say?” But what Jesus says teaches us a lot about grace and mercy. Jesus doesn’t always meet our expectations—not because He failed, but because we had the wrong ideas. And in John 7, we see that many people were disappointed in Jesus. He didn’t operate on their timetables, they thought He hadn’t proven Himself, and He seemed like an unlikely Messiah.
