They are known as "food deserts" - neighborhoods with no or distant grocery stores. Nationally 23.5 million people, 6.5 million of them children, live in food deserts with little or no access to healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. Food deserts exist in urban and rural areas, and affect African Americans disproportionately compared to other racial groups. Food deserts exist in Hampton Roads, and on the next Another View we'll talk about overcoming the challenges of obtaining healthy foods to eat when grocery stores are not accessible.
