This song could be interpreted as an old fashoined love song or something much deeper and profound. This song is about an old musician reminiscing about his past. All those opportunities he had. But for circumstances he may have made it. However, he acknowledges that someone has always been there for him throughout his life that helped wash away the footprints (negative memories and thoughts), the footprints in the sand. The "someone" could be a higher spirit, group consciousness or a partner. I will leave it to your own interpretation.

Lyrics:
Sometimes we can feel that we’re back on the road
With music pumping in our head, about to explode.
One day we thought that we would fill all our dreams
But life is made up of so many extremes.
(We) Combe our lives through, we can see all our chances
Locked in the moment and circumstances
All of my life as wake every day
You’re right next to me and you can wash all away
A world full of trouble that can build up so fast
You reinforce good thoughts, place the things that have passed
Into a wave upon the beach as it washes away
The footprints in the sand.
(Last time) The footprints in the sand
The footprints in the sand.
