For-Profit Healthcare: Is it a Problem?

Listen Later

In this episode, Tripp and Michael discuss the pros and cons of for-profit healthcare. Ultimately, they believe that the healthcare system needs to be  (1) more affordable, (2) more accessible, and (3) higher quality.

While corporate structure matters, what's most important is the alignment of incentives. The current fee-for-service model pits payers (insurance companies and the government) against providers in a zero-sum game. What's the solution? It's value-based reimbursement -- a heavy, but necessary lift.

Just because a company is structured as a not-for-profit, it doesn't mean that they are more ethical. CEOs of not-for-profits are not immune to short-term, myopic thinking.

To be clear, we believe that everyone has a right to affordable, quality healthcare. We're working within the confines of commercial and government insurance while also attempting to disrupt the status-quo. More on the disruption when we discuss value-based reimbursement and the social determinants of health...
