  • The Endless Reservoir of Joy

Spencer walks through Philippians 4:4 "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." Using the Joseph Hall method of meditation from Don Whitney's Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, he walks through one verse question by question. What is it? What causes it? What does it produce? What is contrary to it? Where else does Scripture show it? Along the way he looks at why lasting joy is found only in Christ, why it is always available to us, how it drives out anxiety, and how 1 Chronicles 16 and the Psalms show God's people rejoicing in His presence. Now God's presence lives in us through Christ, the true David.

The episode ends in prayer for the Manga Kanuri of Niger and Nigeria, a frontier people group of about 1.2 million with almost no believers and no full Bible in their language.

    In This Episode:

    • Philippians 4:4, and why joy in the Lord is a command
    • How to meditate on Scripture with the Joseph Hall method
    • 1 Chronicles 16:7-11, Psalm 98:4-6, and Psalm 8:3-4
    • Praying for the Manga Kanuri

Resources Mentioned: Don Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life; O. Hallesby, Prayer; Joshua Project.

Pray with Us: Ask God to strengthen the small number of Kanuri believers, give favor to the mission agencies focused on them, and provide the whole Bible in their language.

  • A Kingdom of Priests

Every great empire in history wanted more territory. Spencer shows how God's kingdom is on the move, too. At Mount Sinai, God called Israel His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. Peter hands those same words to the church. As priests, we represent God to the world and represent the world to God in prayer. And it's our distinctiveness, not our sameness, that makes people ask about the gospel. Spencer walks through Acts 1 and Revelation 5 to show that Jesus died to ransom people from every nation and to make them a kingdom of priests, sent across the street or across the world. He closes in prayer for the Pashtun, one of the largest unreached people groups in the world.

    Scriptures: Psalm 67:1–2; Exodus 19:4–6; 1 Peter 2:5, 9–10, 12; Acts 1:6–8; Revelation 5:9–10
Pray for: the Pashtun, that Scripture would be translated into their language, that God would raise up laborers to live distinct lives among them, and that many would come out of darkness into His marvelous light.

  • God's Victory for God's Glory

Spencer reads Psalm 27:1–3, where David says the Lord is his light and his salvation, and connects it to what John says about Jesus in John 1:4–5. Then he goes to 2 Kings 18 and 19 to watch a king live it out. Hezekiah took Judah's throne at 25, tore out the high places, and smashed the bronze serpent Moses made once the people started burning incense to it. Then he refused to serve the king of Assyria. Sennacherib's messenger showed up at the wall and asked him the question the episode turns on: on what do you rest this trust of yours? He ran through a list of nations and gods Assyria had already erased, and every name on it was true. Hezekiah took the letter into the house of the Lord, spread it out, and asked God to save Judah so that all the kingdoms of the earth would know the Lord is God alone. That night 185,000 Assyrians died in their camp. Spencer closes with the 4 questions he's still working through: what reforms do I need to make, am I living in fear, have I grown complacent, and what am I confident in. Then a prayer for the Hausa, and an ask for the ministry heading into the end of the year.

    Scriptures: Psalm 27:1–3, John 1:4–5
Pray for: neverthirst, that God would raise up laborers for the hardest places and supporters who give sacrificially so Christ would be known.

  • The Battle Starts the Moment You Decide to Pray

A year ago Spencer and a few close friends started meeting at 7 a.m. every Monday in the neverthirst office to pray. Something changed, and none of them can imagine stopping now. In this episode he opens the Psalms to ask what happens when God's people call on Him, then puts a harder question on the table: if men building rockets feel urgency every single day, why don't we feel it about the things of God? Drawing on 19th-century writer Philip Bennett Power and his book The "I Wills" of the Psalms, Spencer talks about why the battle begins the moment you resolve to pray, and why the spirit of prayer is itself something to pray for. He closes with the story of how neverthirst began in 2007, two friends praying once a week over Psalm 67, and asks supporters to pray that this work would magnify Christ among the unreached.

    Scriptures: Psalm 28:1; 55:16–17; 61:1–2; 63:1; 86:7; 121:1; 67:1–2; 2 Chronicles 14:11–12; James 5:17–18; Luke 1:13; Jeremiah 29:12–14; John 4

  • The Hand That Holds the Mountains

Spencer just got back from a week in Glacier National Park with his son Grant, where the best language two grown men could find for twelve miles of the Highline Trail was insane, amazing, beautiful. Right instinct, wrong size. So he turns to Psalm 95, where James Montgomery Boice finds two reasons to worship, in order. First, God is a great God: verses 4 and 5 inventory the depths, the heights, the sea, the dry land, with nothing left over. Second, He is our own dear Shepherd — the hands that formed the dry land formed us, and the hand holding the depths of the earth is the same hand John 10 says no one can snatch us out of. Glacier gives you the first reason for free; it can't tell you whether the One who made it knows your name. The episode closes with a prayer for the Bindla people of Andhra Pradesh, India.

  • Useful and Joyful

Picking up where the last episode left off. God told Moses, "I will be with you." That's it. That was the whole answer to "who am I?"

Spencer walks a chain of that same promise through Genesis, Joshua, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and into the New Testament. Then he asks the question he'd been journaling about that morning: can we lose God's presence? Saul lost it. David begged God not to take it. So where does that leave us on this side of the cross?

The answer he lands on is union and communion. We're sealed in Christ and that doesn't move. Abiding is the part we can neglect.

Two things are at stake when we do. Usefulness, and joy.

He closes with 4 things he wrote in his journal, a quote on Psalm 16:11 from 1654, and prayer for the Tukum of Sudan. 23,000 people in the Nuba Mountains, in a region torn up by conflict, with no known believers.

  • All Authority, All Nations, All He Commanded, All the Days

Spencer walks through the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and the one command at its center: make disciples. Drawing on Herb Hodges and the four "alls" Jesus gives, he ties it to neverthirst's work reaching unreached communities with clean water and the gospel. The episode closes praying for the Terai Brahmin of Nepal, 114,000 people with no known believers.

  • What Are They for So Many?

Spencer reads the feeding of the 5,000 from John 6:4-15 and sits with three questions. What does this show us about God? What about the boy who handed over his lunch? And how should any of it change us in 2026?

The answer to the first one stacks up fast. God sees people in their need. He has compassion. He loves to dwell with the lowly. He holds the power, and He's the one who provides. Jesus feeds more than 10,000 people from five loaves and two fish, then calls himself the bread of life.

Then there's the boy. He didn't have much. He gave it anyway, and Jesus did the rest. Spencer ties that to neverthirst's own start: one village in Wito, South Sudan, and a prayer that God would multiply it.

He leans on Richard Phillips, A.W. Pink, and the prayer-driven ministry of George Mueller, who fed thousands of orphans without a fundraising plan, a marketing team, or a podcast. Just his knees. The takeaway Spencer keeps coming back to: don't measure the need against your own poverty. Measure it against what God can do.

The episode closes with the story of Mey, a man in Southeast Asia who came to faith in 2025 after a neverthirst partner showed up to assess his village for a water project. Then a prayer focus for the Sokoto Fulani, an unreached people group in Niger.

  • We Live if You Are Standing Fast

Spencer walks through 1 Thessalonians 3:6–13, reading it alongside D.A. Carson's book on Paul's prayers. The thread: Paul, under persecution and forced to flee Thessalonica, isn't distressed about his own affliction — he's distressed until Timothy brings word that the young church's faith is holding. Paul's joy and very life are bound up in their spiritual well-being, not their size, popularity, or programs.

From there Spencer draws the application: a life of significance is a life poured out for others, for the glory of God and the advancement of the gospel. He contrasts a culture that asks "how can I use others to serve myself?" with Paul's model of giving your life away.

He shares two field stories (locations withheld for safety): a pastor to nomads in sub-Saharan Africa, called to that work since 1980, who recently baptized 13 new believers — including a village leader who said he'd never seen anyone love his people that way. And a pastor in a region hostile to the gospel who spent three months in prison on conversion charges, then returned, served through a water project, and was eventually welcomed into the very homes that had rejected him.

Spencer closes by praying for an unreached people group in Chad, and giving thanks for the pastors on the ground and the supporters who make the work possible

  • Jason Berry on the front lines in sub-Saharan Africa

Jason just got back from a country in sub-Saharan Africa, where he camped in villages for nearly a week with no electricity and 110-degree heat. He went to document the work for the 99% of supporters who'll never see it firsthand.

He rode a donkey to the contaminated source one mother had used for about 20 years, then filmed her at her new tap stand. The reclaimed time let her be with her 8 kids and start a small business.

Jason and Spencer also talk about why neverthirst now lists regions instead of countries (to protect partners), and how clean water meets a real need and opens the door for the gospel in places where the church is a tiny minority.
