Publisher's Summary:
The collapse of her brief marriage has stalled Bea Nightingale's life, leaving her middle-aged, alone, and teaching in an impoverished borough of 1950s New York. A plea from her estranged brother gives Bea the excuse to escape lassitude by leaving for Paris to retrieve a nephew she barely knows, but the siren call of Europe threatens to deafen Bea to the dangers of entangling herself in the lives of her brother's family.
The story of Bea's travails on the continent is a fierce and heart-breaking insight into the curious nature of love: how it can be commanded and abused; earned and cherished; or even lost altogether.

Good yet not her best
I picked this up because I always like reading about expats and travelers and I'm a bit of a Francophile. Add to that Cynthia Ozick's polished writing... and yet it was flawed for me because I wasn't enamored by any of the characters - there was no one to like. They were mostly spoiled and difficult Americans with the exception of Bea, the protagonist (but she isn't that exciting).
The plot revolves around a dysfunctional family and held my interest, but not my devotion. It portrays family expectancies and betrayals.
I kept thinking it really WAS written in the 1950's because Ozick captured the era so well. In the end however the book lagged for me.
By Cinda C. MacKinnon the author of A PLACE IN THE WORLD
This book was unremarkable.
I am disappointed by Foreign Bodies. I read Heir to the Glimmering World and decided that I loved Cynthia Ozick's writing. However, the story here is not memorable and even now I struggle to remember it. It did not touch me like Heir to the Glimmering World. I found Heir in the library but will purchase a copy for my permanent collection. Foreign Bodies did not excite me and I'm seriously disappointed by this. It is not as good a book as Heir.
Don't Bother reading this book!
Very depressing story. Did not like any of the characters. Author seemed to want to impress us with her use of words that average person has never heard before
this is probably a good book, but for the casual reader of fiction
If you are a Ozick fan, this is probably a good book, but for the casual reader of fiction, it is slow and New York centric.
Three Stars
Interesting story but characters are caricatures-not really believable as people.
