And that change can put enormous pressure on currencies that otherwise have perfectly reasonable fundamental support.

I'll explain what risk-on and risk-off actually mean, why currencies like AUD and JPY can react so differently to market uncertainty, and how a fundamentally bullish AUD/JPY outlook can suddenly come under pressure.

We'll also look at why stock markets, bond yields, and volatility can help us understand investor behavior without turning them into automatic trading signals.

Most importantly, I'll share how I approach these situations without blindly defending my original analysis or abandoning it simply because price moves against me.

Good fundamentals matter. But understanding what the market cares about right now matters just as much.

Here's what many traders misunderstand. Economic data doesn't move currencies simply because a number is good or bad. What matters is what that number changes about the future.

Inflation, employment, GDP and other economic reports can change expectations for central banks, future interest rates and bond yields. Those changing expectations can create fundamental pressure behind currency strength or weakness.

But how does that actually work?

In this episode, I'll connect those pieces in simple English, including a practical EUR/USD example. You'll understand why unchanged interest rates can still move currencies, why higher bond yields aren't automatic buy signals, and why one economic release shouldn't make you abandon your entire fundamental outlook.

I'll also explain how I combine fundamental analysis with my existing price action trading approach, using market structure, support and resistance, confirmation and proper risk management.

Because fundamentals don't replace my technical analysis. They help me understand which side of a currency pair may have the stronger underlying support.

Stop asking whether the economic number was good or bad.

This episode is for forex traders who see a strong economic headline and assume they already know which way the currency should move.

That’s where you can mistake one piece of information for the whole story.

You check the forecast. The number beats it. Surely that means the currency should strengthen?

Not necessarily.

A strong NFP headline can sit beside rising unemployment, weaker wages and downward revisions. Headline inflation can fall while underlying price pressure stays high. The first number you notice doesn’t always give you the clearest picture.

Let’s make this simpler.

In part two of my fundamental analysis series, I’ll help you make sense of CPI, Core CPI, NFP, GDP, PMI and Retail Sales without making you feel like you need an economics degree.

We’ll connect those numbers to the question that matters: do they change what the central bank may do next?

You don’t need to react faster to every release. You need to understand whether the bigger story has actually changed.
