Richard Stirton is a singer who's making a name for himself as an independent artist in the wake of being the first winner of The Voice South Africa. He had singing as a side passion while growing up. After a few attempts at making something of a career in singing, he grinded his way through a year of relentless performing to hone his craft, before eventually getting the recognition he'd been working towards.

1. Sometimes you have a short-term sacrifice for a long-term gain. Take setbacks as an opportunity to practise self-discipline.

2. You should just mess around, because there's no one way to sing. Everyone's heads and mouths are different, so it's how you practise and work out your own way of singing. You have to feel yourself out, and know what you can and can't do through committing and experimenting.

3. Make a mindset shift of aiming to excel rather than be conservative. Aim for everything possible. Rather go for things hard and see what happens.
