Theme: Forgiven People Forgive
Read Palm 32:1-11; Ephesians 4:25-32: Col 3:12-13)
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you…”
Col 3:12-13
In this passage, Paul reminded the Colossians of what God’s grace had done for them, which is also what He has done for us: (1) God chose them (v.12a), (2) God set them apart as holy (v.12b), (3) God loves them (v.12), and (4) God has forgiven them (v.13-14). As Christians, we are chosen by God, set apart, loved, and forgiven. Because of this, we have some duties before God.
1) The duty to forgive: When Stephen was being stoned to death, he asked the Lord not to hold the sin against his attackers (Acts 7:60). Joseph forgave his brothers who sold him into slavery; he eventually provided for them and their families in Egypt (Genesis 45:3–15). Abigail, the wife of Nabal (a wealthy but harsh man whose name means fool), interceded and sought forgiveness from David on behalf of her husband to prevent violence (1 Samuel 25:24–28). Jesus Christ, on the cross, prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). Forgiven people forgive others.
2) The duty to emulate “Even as Christ" (v.13). How did Christ forgive? Graciously, promptly, generously, humbly, fully, without reflecting on past offenses. For example, the woman caught in adultery, His enemies, the executioners, the dying thief. As children, we are called to imitate our Father (Ephesians 5:1-2): "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ" and (1 Corinthians 11:1): "Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did" (1 John 2:6).
Remember, grudges have no place in a Christian’s life, as they can lead to the five terrible sins listed in Col 3:8-9: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language.
Lastly, forgiven people forgive to maintain their friendships. “You will keep your friends if you forgive them, but you will lose your friends if you keep talking about what they did wrong.” (Proverbs 17:9) CEV or GNT
As you pray, ask God to remind you (us) of our duties as forgiven children of God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
