Theme: Forgiveness Brings Freedom
Read Exodus 12:1-14; John 8:31-36.
“...To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now, a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
(John 8:31-36)
The first president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela (from May 10, 1994, to June 14, 1999), was imprisoned for 27 years, from August 5, 1962, until 1990. He was accused of conspiring to overthrow the state during the Rivonia Trial. Nelson Mandela said, "As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison." “Forgiveness is unlocking the door to set someone free and realising you were the prisoner!" says Pastor Max Lucado. What a fundamental truth to take to heart!
One, Jews often don’t realise they were spiritually blind and in bondage (imprisoned). They boasted of being descendants of Abraham, who had never been slaves of anyone! Yet they were in Egypt for 430 years (Exodus 12:40-41). It’s possible to think you are free, but you can be spiritually and emotionally locked up (self-imprisonment) because of hatred or bitterness. But if you face the truth, you can be free! That’s a hard truth.
Second, Jesus is the true truth that sets prisoners free! Anyone who sins is a prisoner of sin, and unforgiveness is a springboard for many sins (Col 3:8-9). Until we come to know Christ as our LORD and Savior and surrender our sinful, bitter lives to Him in repentance to be granted liberty or freedom, we will remain majestic prisoners! Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Without Him, we are incapable of forgiving others, and without receiving forgiveness from Him and forgiving others, we remain in bitterness, hence no freedom.
Do you know the truth, the absolute truth? The real truth? Then you must forgive, and if you do, you will be free in Jesus’ name.
As you pray, LORD, we long for that truth that sets all men and women free, grant it to us we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
