Grasp the Bible

Forgiving Others When They Wrong You - Part 1 (Philemon 1-7)

Listen Later

Welcome to episode 18 of Grasp the Bible.  In this episode, we begin a three-week study of the Book of Philemon.  The series is called “Forgiving Others When They Wrong You.”  Today, we discuss:

  • Background information about the time in which the letter was written
  • The greeting (vv. 1-3)
  • Paul’s prayers and thankfulness for a dear friend (vv. 4-7)

Key takeaways:

  • Christians should approach social concerns not through a political lens, but through a biblical one.
  • Christianity is about a transformation of the way we see and think about other people. When we begin to view others as those with whom life and faith are shared equally in Christ, arrogance and bigotry are finished.
  • Pastors need to be strong preachers, but they also need to be loving people-persons who cultivate life-giving relationships within their congregations and minister to personal needs.

Quotable:

True faith in Christ must find expression in love for his body, the church

Application:

  • Ethical behavior for Christians should arise out of love, rather than regulation or constraint.
  • When we act in accord with the blessings we have in Christ, we grow closer to Christ.
