Many Christians hear Jesus say, “Be perfect,” and immediately feel tension, guilt, confusion, or discouragement.
If moral perfection is impossible for fallen humanity, then what exactly did Jesus mean when he gave this command in Matthew 5:48?
In this episode, we slow down and examine the original meaning of the word translated as “perfect” and uncover how this passage has often been misunderstood. Rather than calling us to impossible moral perfection, Jesus reveals something far deeper about God’s design for humanity, wholeness, and the restoration of the human person.
We explore:
• The meaning of the Greek word teleios
• The difference between completion and completeness
• Why God’s goal is not to make us less human, but fully human
• What it means to reflect God’s image rightly
• How corruption distorted humanity’s original design
• Why this passage is both a promise and an invitation
This reflection is part of the ongoing series, Deviation from Design.
