Former President Lee Teng-hui has been laid to rest at a military cemetery on the outskirts of Taipei. Lee died at the age of 97 in late July at Taipei Veterans General Hospital due to multiple organ failure. He had been in hospital for nearly six months prior to his death.
Lee was Taiwan’s first democratically-elected leader. On Wednesday, national flags at all government buildings were flown at half-mast for a day in honor of the late leader.
President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President William Lai, and other high-ranking officials attended Lee’s interment ceremony on Wednesday. In a Facebook post, Tsai said that people should bear in mind Lee’s wishes that democracy continue to deepen in Taiwan and that Taiwanese people stand in solidarity.
Lee was a devout Christian, and a minister with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan led a Christian service in Lee’s memory. He said that Lee had dedicated his life to Taiwan.
