With Mercedes leaving Formula 1 at the end of the 1955 season, its two main drivers went elsewhere: Fangio moved to Ferrari and Moss went to Maserati. The manufacturer from Maranello raced in the championship, having inherited cars and materials from Lancia, with the former Lancia D50, modified for the 1956 season.
