Preparing Your Heart to Serve
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Did you know God has prepared specific works for each of us to do? It may be hugging your child and cleaning a scrape and kissing a boo boo. It may be sharing Christ with your neighbor. Or it may be in a more organized type of ministry, such as at PWOC.
Each year at this time we begin the process of interviewing and choosing the executive board for next year’s PWOC. These include president, Spiritual Life vp, Programs VP, financial liaison, and administration coordinator. These positions are chosen through an application and interview process. Then the new president chooses the rest of the extended board, for such positions as childcare coordinator, worship leader, publicity, prayer, community reach, hospitality, and participation.
Apply for the Right Reason
I would like to talk today about ways to prepare your heart to serve the Lord most effectively this year. God is calling some of you to serve on the executive board next year. Others he is calling to serve on the extended board. And others he is calling to serve on support teams or in one-on-one relationships. Some he is calling primarily to serve in your family right now. Wherever God calls us, that calling is noble and beautiful when we respond His way.
20 I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
Sometimes people desire a board position for the wrong reason. They feel a need for significance and struggle with feelings of low self-worth. Having an official position can temporarily bolster a person’s weak self-esteem. People notice you and perhaps admire you and look up to you. But this is the wrong reason to be on the board. If you struggle with low self-esteem, then that need will overshadow your ability to genuinely serve others selflessly. Whenever someone brings a criticism or suggestion for improvement, you may take it personally and feel attacked. When someone doesn’t show enough appreciation or approval, you may lash out and complain they don’t appreciate you. Our value comes from God, not from our position on a board. If you recognize yourself here, then bring your heart to God for healing. Seek out ladies who can work with you to see yourself as God sees you. Let him heal this area so you will be free to truly serve others freely in the future.
The application process itself can be a growing process. Perhaps through the interview time you may not be chosen to serve this year, but will see areas to target for personal growth this year so that you will be ready to serve in the future. It’s often also a good growth process to be involved as a team member before actually taking on a board position. If that is the recommendation you receive, receive it graciously and commit to growing and learning all you can until God calls you to something else.
I will never leave you nor forsake you.
