Great connectors aren’t necessarily born outgoing. The ability to connect with people is a skill. And like any skill, it can be learned, practiced, and improved.
When I was climbing the ranks as a basketball referee, I realized I wasn’t naturally great at connecting. So I started studying referees who were. I watched how they asked questions, made eye contact, carried themselves during difficult conversations, and built relationships with players and coaches.
In this episode, I share three ways to strengthen your connection skills: be curious instead of trying to be impressive, create connection through small moments, and find someone who does it well and mirror what they do.
Connection matters everywhere, from your career and workplace relationships to friendships and family. You don’t need a different personality to become a better connector. You need to practice the skill.

Making a leadership decision is only half the job.
How you communicate that decision determines what happens next.
After 25 years of refereeing basketball, I’ve learned that the moment after you blow the whistle matters just as much as the call itself. Everyone is looking to you for clarity, direction, and what they should do next. The same is true in leadership.
In this episode, I share a simple lesson for communicating decisions under pressure: pause, take a breath, and consider every person who needs to understand, respond to, or act on your decision.
Whether you’re leading a team, managing an organization, running a business, or coaching from the sidelines, effective leadership requires more than making the call. It requires communicating that call in a way that helps people move forward together.
