Before Christ entered into His official ministry phase of life, He revealed His submission and obedience to the Father by being immersed by John. Afterwards, being led of the Spirit, He went into the desert to finish His preparation by being tempted by Satan. The three temptations which were recorded correspond with the three categories of sin listed by John in his first epistle ... the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. Jesus dealt with these temptations victoriously as a result of spending time with the Father in prayer and fasting, and spending time reading and memorizing the Word of God.
