In Genesis 1:2 the earth was in a desperate and terrible state of disorder, waste and darkness due to the influence of Satan and the kingdom of darkness. In Genesis 1:3, God's solution to the problem on the earth is to speak and bring light into the darkness. Jordan explains how this scripture points us to Jesus who came into this earth as both the "word" of God and the "light" of the world.
