We Back!! Its been too long since we’ve dropped a new podcast on Y’all. We normally record on Sundays then release on Tuesdays, but Father’s Day and a Cali trip back to back held us up just a little. Jumping back into the mix, we talk about all the new releases we’ve had over the past few weeks. It’s been a lot! Obviously, Kanye’s been releasing every Friday so we catch up on the two most recent, Nas with Nasir and Teyana Taylor with K.T.S.E.  Jay Rock dropped his long-awaited project redemption and of course, Drake dropped his 25 song Scorpion project.

From there we talk about the California trip we took for BET weekend (minus one) and what mischief we got into while out there partying, politicking and networking. California is always good to us. We touch on a few other topics as well so press play and listen in to the conversation!

OK OK OK Episode #19 is here! First a disclaimer, we took a break from discussing the week’s current events on this one and just let the conversation flow. There was A LOT that happened this week musically but allow us a moment to digest before we discuss. Either that or we took the week off to celebrate Fathers Day so we recorded a few days in advance lol.

None the less we got right to the shenanigans. Skip the week in reviews we took a couple shots of Hennessy Pure White and got right to work. Speaking of Hennessy, why do so many Black people drink it? Is it a coincidence or is it just because its that good? Whats up with music genre’s being appropriated for pop appeal? All of a sudden you need a latin remix?! Name a song that general consensus says is terrible, but you still like. We’re on it!

“Mizzy’s Birthday”

 

Episode 18 and it’s Mizzy’s Birthday! We came off one hell of a weekend and spent a few minutes discussing what we had going on. Hue was low key, Mizzy was wasted,  KayPlaya got no sleep and D-Money got plenty of sleep. From there we jump into discussing new music. Kids See Ghosts came out and we gave first impressions on yet another 7 song Kanye produced project. Is Cudi back? We also touched on the ending of the Pusha T and Drake beef courtesy of J Prince

This around the time the Henny pure White started to kick in. We got our sports talk on and discussed the Golden knights not being able to win the Stanley cup and Golden State sweeping the Cavaliers to win the NBA championships. For the rest just press play and tune in!

FOUR THE RECORD PODCAST Episode 17:

“That Escalated Quickly!”

 

Episode 17 is here! Man oh man do we have some topics to discuss. We left off last week talking about Drake’s response to Pusha T with the Duppy Freestyle. As it stood we had Drake ahead in the battle. My did things change after hearing Pusha come back with the Story Of Adidon. Now the question is, how does this song effect Drake’s career? Not only in Hip-Hop but business in general.

Before we get too deep in that topic, a LOT of new music dropped! The obvious being Kanye’s ‘Ye album so you know we have to discuss that. Honorable mentions include Black Thought, Dizzy Wright and a pair of singles from Mac Miller and A$ap Ferg.

From there we jump into new territory and talk sports. The Las Vegas Knights had an amazing first season making all the way to the Stanley Cup and of course the 4th edition of the Warriors vs. Cavs is under way. Episode 16 is here! Fresh off a busy Memorial Day weekend, the crew is back at it with afresh episode of Four The Record.

Unlike last episode, there was plenty of new music to discuss and we took a moment to get caught up only after giving a brief recap of our weekend. Plenty events, little sleep and a welcome to Monday when we could finally relax.

 

Pusha-T dropped his Daytona project right on schedule so we took a moment to discuss the project in its entirety as well as the project’s final song Infrared. Not long after the Drake diss was dropped Drake fired right back with his diss track Duppy Freestyle. Who’s was better? Should Pusha-T respond? We give our opinions on the matter.  From there we discuss a few other recently released projects and songs we enjoyed on a personal level.

FOUR THE RECORD PODCAST Episode 15:

“They Shall Remain Nameless”

 

Episode 15! Back to our regular activities on this one, however, I must add this is the first episode where we didn’t pregame! Despite the lack of liquid courage to kickstart the conversation, we still touched on a few cool topics..

Firstly, we start off by showing love to the Las Vegas Golden Knights. As we’re sure most of you should know by now, the Golden Knights are a Las Vegas-based expansion team in the NHL  that are enjoying a monumental first season. Just before recording this episode, they were able to clinch a game 6 win against the Jets allowing them to advance to the Stanley Cup. As Las Vegas’ first and currently only professional team, the city is going crazy over it.

From there and after a few quick tangents, we jump into discussing some DJ related topics. First up? Songs we like to play while Djing regardless or not if they are popular or if we think the crown would enjoy as much as us. Sometimes in our set we need to dedicate a song to ourselves to get our energy right so here we discuss what those songs are.

From there, we get into the effects the popularity of music streaming has had on the DJs. Before the cloud was a thing and streaming music was the normal way to access music, DJs had the ability to upload mixes, remixes, and their favorite songs online. This of course was done with the intent of showcasing their skills and obtaining a buzz. As a result of streaming, record labels now make a significant amount of revenue from music streams so they want to control where their streams come from. That means no more posting mixes online for DJs. We discuss that further and steps we have to make to get around this new issue

After that, we get into a real DJ debate (double meaning)! Controllers or Turntables? At this point which is better? This might get a little heated. Regardless we give you our answer and why we feel the way we feel on the subject. Before we close it out we touch on a few more DJ related topics. You’ll just have to hang around to get to those though!

FOUR THE RECORD PODCAST Episode 14: “J.B. & em Drink Too Much”

 

Episode 14! This episode is (rightfully) titled, “J.R. & em Drink Too Much!”. A quote from a 90’s video I’m sure some of you caught. Let’s just say are pregame session was heavy for this one and its a decent amount of liquor influenced nuances sprinkled throughout this episode! Once we get past that, we get into a few discussions around current DJ culture.

Firstly, we touch on DJs who don’t take the proper time to learn basic sound engineering and troubleshooting before taking gigs. With controllers becoming more and more common in the industry, DJs are becoming more reliant on the technology to be fail-safe. The problem is, what happens when something goes wrong and you as the DJ need to troubleshoot? Even on turntables where troubleshooting options are fairly limited, are you prepared to figure it out on the fly?

Moving on from the troubleshooting music side of things we get into general troubles the DJs face. One example being bathroom breaks! Non-DJs never realize, but more often than not we are the only DJ in the venue at a given time. Because of this bathroom breaks (especially coupled with drinking) can be a tricky concept to tackle. We give our take on that.

Then finally, we start to talk about hospitality (or the lack thereof) within the club culture. Doorman not letting you in for wearing the same thing you just saw someone else get it in with? Don’t worry we’ve experienced it as well.

Episode 13! Thank You for lasting 12 weeks going in to 13 with this episode of Four The Record

Rae Sremmurd dropped a 3 piece project with SremmLife3. One-part solo Slim Jimmy, one-part solo Swae Lee and one-part Rae Sremmurd group, we touch on the project and their impact so far in music. We also talk about the monster video and single Childish Gambino dropped with This Is America. Definitely talked about that and everything Donald Glover!

From there we just let the conversation roll. Classic albums and if artists these days even care to make long term music, the downside to having so much access to music and more are discussed. Pardon the brief moments of silence as (hence the title) we recorded this episode short one mic so we had to make do with what we had.

FOUR THE RECORD PODCAST Episode 12: “Three’s Company”

 

Episode 12! This week we’re one man down, but we’re still gonna keep the momentum flowing on tthis, our 12th podcast episode!

 

Jumping right in, we talk about New music with Kanye & TI’s ‘Ye vs The People track. We give our opinions on the track and somewhat touch on what has transpired with Kanye since recording our last episode. From there we show some much deserved love to Janelle Monae and her latest project Dirty Computer. In comparison to ‘Ye Janelle Monae has always been a relatively outspoken artist to we touch on those parallels and her music in general.

From there, we get into some DJ talk. Songs that you commonly hear Djs play but personally hate and/or are just plain tired of hearing. I know we all have at least one song so check out our picks here and see if you agree with what we came up with.

Lastly, we touch on why it is you don’t hear very many local artists on FM radio. Especially here on our home turf in Las Vegas. We are commonly asked this question by fans and artists alike so we break down some of the reasons this may be.

FOUR THE RECORD PODCAST: “Some People Don’t Get It”

 

Episode 11! Kicking this one off spending a little time dissecting J. Cole’s newest project KOD. Initial impressions are up first and of course we had to speculate on one of the stand out tracks so far, 1985. Is this just what the culture needed? Does Cole have a solid piece of work with this project? We let you know what we think right out of the gate.

From there, we move on to the slew of release dates mentioned by Kanye West for the G.O.O.D. Music Camp. It’s looking like its going to be another Cruel Summer! With release dates for Teyana Taylor, Pusha T, Kid Cudi and Kanye himself, the summer is looking promising. On the non-music related side of things, Kanye did seem to ruffle some feathers with a tweet he sent co-signing a not so popular political correspondent. That seemed to spark a debate within the crew! Is it only about the music or is it bigger than that? We debate.

We wrap up this season both discussing the difficulties of surviving the industry as parents to young children and paying respect to the passing of DJ / Producer Avicii. Despite the job looking like one big party, there’s usually a lot that goes into establishing and maintaining a career as a DJ. Therefore, it often comes at the expensive of  physical and mental health. We share the difficulties on our level and can only imagine what it takes on someone like Avicii’s level (no pun intended).
