Show Notes: Josh and Sean talk about tips and tricks for getting into good habits regarding finances and money while you are in your 20’s.
Banking: If you want to get set up with a free bank, President’s Choice is our first choice, and Tangerine (previously called ING) are our top recommendations. President’s Choice offers free banking, and promises to maintain that standard forever. Tangerine offers better interest rates than PC, but they aren’t truly free (they will charge you a small fee for checks). The best solution is to combine them by using President’s Choice for your checking and cashflow, and Tangerine as your savings bank. If you want instructions on how to get going with this, go to Josh’s blog here for checking, and here for savings or the MBNA credit card.
Credit cards: The best source for credit card information is http://www.milliondollarjourney.com/. This website will give you a comparison of all the credit cards in Canada. Right now the best credit card without any annual fees is the Smart Cashback MBNA credit card. Go here to get started to get the 60 dollar sign-up bonus.
Apps:
* PC Plus app (not mentioned in episode, but gets you more points when shopping – highly recommended if you shop at Superstore or Extrafoods)
* Co-Op App
* Checkout51
* Snapsaves
* Fieldagent (iOS only)
Process for buying something online:
* Visit a consumer comparison engine (my favorite is shopbot.ca and addall.com for books) but you can find more by searching for “consumer comparison engines canada”.
* Find the store you wish to buy from.
* Go to Cashbackholic.com search for the store you wish to buy from. Determine if that cashback service is one you want to get involved with (look at their ratings — I personally try to limit myself to no more than 3 different services).
* Go to the cashback service that provides the best return. In the example we talked about in the podcast, you would go to ebates.ca. Ebates is the service I most often use as they give good cashback rates to both Ebay and Amazon.ca. Search for the store you want to buy the product from. Click through to that store, and everything you purchase until you close that browser window will be recorded, and you will receive cashback for those purchases.
* For bonus points, install a browser add on that allows you to add stickynotes to a webpage. For Firefox I use Floatnotes.
Finally, the book that Sean recommended is called: The Complete Tightwad Gazette.
