In 1827, a bedraggled group of mountain men made their way in a long train of humans and pack animals through the Mojave Desert in what is today South Eastern California. As temperatures soared and water supplies dwindled, the leader of the party, Jedediah Smith, hoped to make contact with the tribe who had saved him when he passed through this same territory a year ago.
The tribe, who gave the desert it’s name, were known as the Mojave.
