Sermon Notes
History proves we’re as imperfect as anyone else at being our own authority.
All of us come under the “sub-mission” to some version of a good life.
Transcendent Purpose
Surrendering to a “mission” that leaves us empty in this world and in the next is something everyone wants to avoid.
“Free to be me” sounds good in theory…
The greatest hurts received and given
If we’re imperfect at being our own authority…
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me but raise them up at the last day.
For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
He went on a little farther and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the awful hour awaiting him might never come.
“Father, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take away this cup from me. Yet I want your will, not mine.”
The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had:
Jesus surrendered to God’s mission and lived the greatest life ever lived!
Character not circumstances
Choosing ourselves as imperfect authority out of self-preservation leads to the very dysfunction we’re trying to avoid.
Sub-mission to God leads to the best life we can have both now and in eternity!
If we’re imperfect at being our own authority, how do we not submit to a “mission” that leaves us empty?
