Episode 7: Beauty From Ashes
Isaiah 61: 1-4 says:
61 sThe Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has tanointed me
to bring good news to the poor;1
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and uthe opening of the prison to those who are bound;2
2 vto proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
wand the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
xto give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
ythe oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
zthat they may be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, athat he may be glorified.3
4 bThey shall build up the ancient ruins;
they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
This couldn’t be more true for Ashley, she has been freed from former devastations, she is liberated from the prison of addiction and can now truly be an oak of righteousness. I had never fully understood this bible passage until my good friend Kyle McIntosh named his tattoo parlor Beauty From Ashes to show his own rise out of addiction and on a path to fulfillment.
During this episode Ashley discusses what it took for her to finally begin repairing herself. She discusses the use of meditation and truly understanding who she is. She no longer feels the craving of approval from others and to “fit in”. She is happy with who she is in all ways, including and more than anything her sobriety.

Episode 6: Rock Bottom
Before anyone can begin the rise out of addiction they have to hit THEIR rock bottom. While many can never claw their way back from rock bottom, Ashley finally sees herself as totally stripped down. A great quote that I have alwasy loved is, “Never be afraid to fall apart. It presents an opportunity to rebuild yourself the way you wish you’d been all along.” This quote exemplifies Ashleys battle and needing to completely fall apart and realize she coudn’t self medicate, she couldn’t run anymore she was going to have to rebuild yourself.
During this episode Ashley discusses hitting her bottom before her last arrest. Ashley discusses the numerous times she would overdose and wake up covered in cold water and had just been narcaned. Ashley also details her last arrest and is looking at an initial offer of 25 years in prison. She discusses what it took to get to the Jackson Jennings Community Corrections and give her hope of sobriety and filling the hole inside her.

Episode 5: My Way
People who are stubborn many times can't see the failure in their own plans. They believe that even if “their way” isn’t the right way for everyone else, it’s the best for them and they know how to handle things. Stubbornness will also cost people the opportunity to know when to adjust a plan and how to know when to change course. They will steer the ship directly into the storm, because they know best.
During this episode Ashley discusses returning to her Mom’s house after the Wrap program and eventually falling back into the old habits that have always haunted her. After a brief stay at the Madison Women’s Prison Ashley asks to be placed in Seymour, IN. This allowed Ashley the separation from Lawrence County that she so desperately needed. While she was clean from drugs, Ashley was drinking heavily and was still trying to fill a void in her life. Eventually she ended up back in Mitchell, and old practices die hard.

Episode 4: Darkness
Eminem’s song Darkness puts into perspective the feelings that addicts have going through the cycle of sobriety and addiction. The lyrics go:
Here I am, alone again
Can't get out of this hole I'm in
It's like the walls are closin' in
You can't help me, no one can
I can feel these curtains closin'
I go to open 'em
But something pulls 'em closed again
(Hello darkness, my old friend)
During this episode Ashley discusses another try at rehab after a stay at Indiana Women’s Prison. She discusses how many addicts put reservations on their sobriety, meaning they will stay clean unless something happens. This is the cycle of addicts keeping one foot in the addiction and not being able to break free. Ashley discusses after a handful more arrests her being sent to the WRAP program in Bartholomew County and how this different program of recovery affected her.
