African Americans were legally blocked out of the political process by 1890. In spite of the some progress made thanks to the northern migration, the south was air tight in the grip of Jim Crow. It proved to be a long, hard and deadly fight to get the ballot into black hands and become a part of the political process. Sound familiar?
