For Missions Sunday, we’re going to begin to dive into the topic of “What is the Local Church’s Role in Missions?”  Is it to meet as many physical needs as we can? Share the Gospel?  Outreach?  Send money to people who can do these things? This is a big question that we’re not going to get fully answered in one sermon.  But at least we can start to think through the question as a church and what the Bible has to say about it.  Recently, our Local and Go Global Mission Teams have started to try and rediscover what missions is, because it’s hard for us to discern what our role in Missions is if we don’t have a clear understanding of what Missions is.

The astonishing (and sometimes hard to believe) message of the Gospel is that it’s free. We may not offer money for it, but in what ways do we act like we need to earn God’s favor? In what ways do we seek to put God in our debt by our good works? In what ways do we think God owes us because of something we’ve done? We are reminded in today's passage, that the gospel is not for purchase. Instead, it is a free gift through Jesus’ costly purchase of us.
