Frequency Horizon

NorCal DJ soupANDsalad delivered his second guest mix for the Frequency Horizon podcast, which aired on Pirate Cat Radio 92.9FM, in June 2024.

This hour of music is a recording from an ecstatic dance he played. It's a journey through a wide range of emotions and sounds, and will be good company for your introspective travels—as well as bright summer days.

I gathered together a collection of some of my favourite memories from my time producing my Frequency Horizon radio show for Pirate Cat Radio in Los Gatos, California.

In this aircheck, a Guadalajaran DJ gives us a tour of his neighborhood, we take in a dog surfing competition in Pacifica, interview a Canadian with a sense of humor, connect with some French interviewees via a phone booth set up at Burning Man, and are treated to a performance of traditional music at a waterfall in Puerto Vallarta.

I hit the slopes one final time this season—this time at Palisades Tahoe.

And I head out to Bakersfield, California to take in the wondrous spectacle that is Lightning in a Bottle music festival, checking out sets from the likes of Skrillex, MIA + Rufus du Sol, and even scoring an interview backstage with Nia Archives!

I fret about whether I'm about to get scammed as I head out to Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival 2024.

And ANDON delivers a fantastic warm-up guestmix called "La Barosa" from across the Atlantic Ocean.

Mat calls in from Long Beach in the Tofino-Ucluelet area of Vancouver Island, Canada.

Plus, San Francisco-based Rave Mom sends in a sick guestmix—and tells us about how she actually grew up in the area our radio station now covers.

We check out the various booths along East Cliff during the Logjam Longboard surf competition.

And WYA? (Where You At, from San Jose) provides a dope guestmix in the second half of the show.

This is the Frequency Horizon!

Tune in live each week from 10-midnight on Friday on kpcr.org or 92.9FM in Los Gatos, California (or Campbell or San Jose).

In addition to a varied music stream of chill proportions, we'll take you on a hike in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and contemplate the benefits of surfing with a pair of rad Guatemalan brothers just north of Santa Cruz.

Tune-in live every Friday night from 10-midnight on 92.9FM Pirate Cat Radio kpcr.org.

A couple European exchange students we meet by the beach in their van have a surprisingly inspiring perspective on journalistic possibilities.

DJ Yuka Yu (@yukaswat) teaches the fundamentals of electronic music mixing.

And our program manager randomly appears when when I'm surfing instead of completing my show—and yet it's kinda awesome...

Since the solar eclipse rolled through North America this week, we decided to replay our mini-doc from the 2017 Oregon Eclipse music fest.

DJ Little John was at that event. And in this we have the first-ever "sneak peek" mini-mix from him—straight outta Shanty Shack, in Santa Cruz.

This show first aired on 92.9FM Pirate Cat Radio in Los Gatos, California. Tune in each Friday at kpcr.org from 10-midnight.

We go from a rainy surf at Steamer Lane on a Wednesday evening in Santa Cruz, to linking up with some dudes who appeared on the Frequency Horizon a few years back (when we were on the air in Canada).

We’ll check out the London Elektricity show in Oakland.

And DJ Melisa delivers her third guestmix… just days after we land on the cover of Metro Silicon Valley (at least as part of a sidebar)!
