This is our Freshet Friday podcast for October 23rd, 2026. This week saw local election winners and losers taking stock of the results of their campaigns and voters starting to assess the changes that will come from those results. And provincial election day is tomorrow, so this week's episode also takes a look at the last days of the provincial campaign along with our regular Freshet 9-1-1, Sports, What's On and Favourite Stories segments. Enjoy!
This week, you'll hear news about a fire in New Westminster that left dozens of residents displaced after damage to their three-storey apartment complex early Sunday morning, more election race updates in both the provincial and local elections, and a great investigative story by Cornelia about why Government advisors billed Burnaby Hospital Phase 2 project for 108 helicopter trips - and much more!
Welcome to the 30th episode of Freshet Friday! This week we covered the second last week of the local election race and the first full week of the provincial election campaign underway in the 11 constituencies covered by our readership area. We also explored why Port Moody won't be going ahead with building a neighbourhood energy utility to heat new developments in its downtown area (despite having spent more than half a million dollars studying its feasibility), how former Coquitlam Express goaltender Clay Stevenson is making a name for himself with the Winnipeg Jets, and how a new documentary is honouring the legacy of local legend and national hero Terry Fox. Enjoy the episode!
This is our podcast for October 2nd, 2026, and we are all about elections this week. Two of them, as a matter of fact. The first is the October 17th Civic Elections happening across all our communities. We hope all of you picked up our special election print editions yesterday and have been pouring through the candidate profiles we provided. And the second, of course, is the upcoming provincial snap election being held on October 24th. today we're doing something really special. We'll talk about why doing the work of covering elections is important, the role local news plays in creating an informed electorate, and our observations on what it takes to cover elections.
Welcome to our September 25, 2026 Freshet Friday podcast. To absolutely no-one's surprise, we have a heavy focus on not one, but two, different elections that are somehow happening simultaneously. Candidates running in the October 17th local government elections are now competing for attention with candidates for the October 24th provincial election. And that has definitely gotten our attention. Also this week, we'll talk about the sad passing of former New Westminster city councilor and Citizen of the Year Lorrie Williams, how three mid-century houses originally built in Coquitlam homes will find a new life in Haida Gwaii and why we're able to feature more unbearably cute videos of bear cubs from Tri-Cities again this week. We'll also have a feature interview with Jennifer McKinnon of the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce about the 2026 Business Showcase they will be hosting next month. We hope you enjoy the episode!
Welcome to our September 18th, 2026 podcast. This week, we're going to be talking local elections as nominations just closed for the October 17th vote. And now we know who is running for what. Our team has the full story. We'll also look at where the bears are roaming free in the Tri-Cities. We'll get a preview of the upcoming season for the Coquitlam Express, and we'll hear all about the exciting events involved in this year's Culture Days, including an exclusive interview with Laura Grady from Arts New West about the 2026 Cultural Crawl.
It's September 11, 2026 and there's a lot going on! Not only is the weather starting to cool, but election season is very much heating up! In addition to lots of news about candidate announcements and upcoming debates, we'll find out how a 1910-era house in the New Westminster's Queen’s Park neighbourhood sustained significant damage in a Sept. 6 fire, why work on Burnaby's anti-racism and poverty reduction strategy has been delayed, how a new sidewalk mural in Port Coquitlam is helping to commemorate veterans, why the local junior hockey scene is going to look a little different this season, and how the Mossom Creek Hatchery and Education Centre in Port Moody is celebrating its 50th birthday.
It's September 4, 2026 and today is our Silver Anniversary podcast - the 25th episode of Freshet Friday. In this special anniversary episode, you'll find out why there is now a food bank vending machine at a Burnaby Skytrain station, what to expect in a new push for more affordable housing in Port Moody, why New Westminster's Rotary Tower is seeking financial support from BC Housing and who has just jumped into the fall election local races in the Tri-Cities.

In this week's episode, we find out how a mighty New Westminster squirrel managed to knock out power in the Uptown and Sapperton neighbourhoods, explore this week's new election announcements, hear some of the touching stories from behind the wheel of cars at the Port Coquitlam car show, and hear how the SFU pipe band won it all - for the 7th time - in Glasgow last week. And this week we have two very special guests to tell us all about the Hyack Festival Association's Summer Music and Fireworks Festival - which takes place tomorrow at New Westminster Quay. And, as usual, we have inspiring sports stories, our regular Freshet 9-1-1 feature, news about upcoming events and much, much more!
