Our reporter Lucy Kang has been speaking to family members and loved ones of people who are incarcerated inside these institutions.

Today, we’ll hear from the founder of We Are Their Voices, a group of family members fighting for better conditions for their incarcerated loved ones during the pandemic. Renee Benavidez started that group earlier this summer. Her husband Jason is incarcerated inside California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi. Here’s Renee and her daughter Mia.

Event: We Are Their Voices is organizing a protest at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego this Saturday at 8:30am. Meet at the corner of Alta Road and Calzada de la Fuente. Masks and physical distancing required at all times.

1:50 – KPFA News: With the number of new cases of coronavirus exploding, and the number of Intensive Care beds at zero, the Fresno City Council is meeting to consider the unprecedented step of ordering a five-day complete shutdown and closure of all retail businesses for a period of five consecutive days.  The Emergency Shut Down is effective immediately.  The City’s proposed Emergency Shut Down order goes farther by stating that if ICU capacity does not improve in five days, the could extend for another five days.  Vic Bedoian reports from Fresno.
