Data Democratization & Cloud Transformation

Cloud transformation isn't new. It's been happening for over a decade but accelerated when the COVID-19 pandemic drove companies to fast-track their plans to provide new or additional digital services to customers and employees.

Businesses move to the cloud to obtain a competitive advantage, but for all the limitless potential of cloud transformation, the source of that advantage comes down to two elements: the data you have and what you do with it. The goal of data democratization is to make data available to more people so that they can do more analytics quickly and better harness the value of the data.

Unfortunately, the same activities that data democratization has enabled, those that fully utilize data and create the biggest advantages for cloud-based businesses, are also the ones that pose the biggest risks.

This new era, shepherded in by cloud transformation and data democratization, is characterized by the following:

  1. increasing adoption of cloud data storage technologies across multiple cloud providers. These technologies are often configured differently, resulting in numerous architectures that are hard to manage, constantly changing, and require deep cloud expertise.
  2. the proliferation of data is caused by developers and data scientists who can freely copy, share, and move data as they please. When they inadvertently move sensitive data to a lower environment without involving security, they put sensitive data at risk.
  3. a faster rate of change as release cycles now happens in weeks, days, and hours rather than months and years, often leaving security out of the process or forcing security to respond quickly to ensure data is appropriately protected.

The convergence of these factors has created an innovation attack surface – a new threat vector that most organizations unconsciously accept as the cost of doing business. In contrast to traditional attack surfaces determined by external forces (including bad internal actors) seeking to exploit vulnerabilities to gain illicit, access to protected information, the innovation attack surface results from the massive, decentralized, accidental risk created by the smartest people in the business. In essence, it refers to the continuous unintentional risk cloud data users, such as developers and data scientists, create when using data to drive innovation.
