Amplified Intelligence

From 30 Million Coders to over a Billion in 24 Months

Listen Later

Andrej Karpathy named it in early 2025. By May 2026 it had eaten the entire stack. People are now building complete, paying software products by describing intent in natural language and letting AI agents handle the actual implementation. 92 percent of US developers use these tools daily. 63 percent of new builders have never written a line of traditional code. The builder population is projected to leap from 30 million toward a billion. The vocabulary shift took roughly 24 months, and it has restructured the entire labor market for software.

Jon and Pietro sit firmly in the pro camp on this one and openly stress test their own optimism. The conversation walks through what's been unlocked, internal tools that used to take months now built in an afternoon, the eye blink that took an animator 15 minutes per character now handled in a line of code, interface designers freed from drafting error states plate by plate, non technical creatives finally able to build the software they've always wanted. The democratization is real, the productivity gains are real, and the joy of going from idea to working artifact in a single sitting is real.

Then they push into the harder side. The looming SaaS apocalypse where 285 billion dollars in per seat pricing value evaporates. The middleware and plug in marketplaces that have powered creative studios for two decades getting hollowed out. The Wharton finding that humans accept incorrect AI answers 73 percent of the time. And the sharper distinction between cognitive offloading and cognitive surrender, between the calculator user who still holds judgment and the developer who merges a 600 line pull request unread. The episode lands on what the next literacy actually looks like. Not syntax. Not prompt tricks. Context engineering, systems thinking, and the discipline of knowing what you actually know versus what the model told you. The next classroom rewards the kid who says the model is wrong even when the model sounds confident.
