Talent may open the door, but faith, character and preparation help a young man walk through it with purpose.
In this episode of From Brother to Brother, Dr. Keith Wolaridge sits down with DeJon Jernagin of California Recruits for an honest and practical conversation about navigating today's college recruiting landscape. Drawing from four decades of experience, DeJon explains how recruiting has evolved, what star rankings really mean and how student-athletes can earn the attention of coaches and recruiters.
The conversation explores what college programs evaluate beyond game statistics, including size, speed, athletic measurements, academics and social media presence. DeJon also discusses the importance of attending the right camps, receiving an honest assessment of an athlete's abilities and developing a recruiting plan early.
For Black families guiding young men through this process, the episode offers an important reminder: the goal is bigger than recognition, a scholarship or a famous logo. Recruiting should help a young man find an environment where he can develop academically, athletically, spiritually and personally.
DeJon also clarifies the difference between a prospect and a recruit, recruiting letters and legitimate offers, and preparation versus what he calls "Parental Recruiting Anxiety."
Whether your student-athlete is beginning the journey or working to gain serious attention, this conversation offers families a clearer path forward—one grounded in faith, informed decisions and long-term purpose.
Because the journey is about more than becoming a successful athlete. It is about helping a young man understand who he is, whose he is and what he is being prepared to become.
It is not where an athlete starts—it is where he finishes.

What happens when a generation of young men is carrying pain they were never taught how to talk about? On this episode of From Brother to Brother, Dr. Keith Wolaridge sits down with DeJon Jernagin of the Man Up Foundation for a real conversation about fatherhood, mentorship, responsibility, and reaching our young men before the streets, silence, or hurt get to them first. DeJon shares how losing 12 friends before the age of 18 shaped his calling to pour back into young men and create the kind of guidance, accountability, and safe space so many of our boys are searching for. The brothers also get personal about their relationships with their own fathers and the power of finally hearing the words, "I'm proud of you." From learning how to communicate what hurts to developing courage, integrity, confidence, and a willingness to work, this conversation challenges men to remember that our boys don't just need another program, they need men willing to be present. Because in the Kingdom, manning up isn't about pretending nothing hurts; it's about doing the work, healing what needs to be healed, and making sure the generation behind us doesn't have to figure manhood out alone.
