HEALS POD

From Cop to Politician: Brian Hibbetts on Serving the Las Vegas Community

Listen Later

In this episode of the HEALS Pod, I, Diego Trujillo, had the pleasure of welcoming Brian Hibbetts, a dedicated public servant and current member of the Nevada State Assembly representing District 13. As we navigate through an election year, our conversation delved into the importance of community representation and the legislative process, particularly in light of the pressing issues facing our community.

Brian shared his personal journey, starting from his roots in Las Vegas, where he was born and raised. He recounted his upbringing in a middle-class household, with a father who was a plumber and a mother who became a registered nurse after returning to school. This background laid the foundation for his commitment to public service, which he pursued through a 27-year career with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, ultimately retiring as a police sergeant.

We discussed the transition from law enforcement to politics, with Brian initially having no desire to enter the political arena. However, after retirement, he felt compelled to run for office when he realized that the candidates vying for his district did not align with the needs of the community. This led him to take action rather than remain an "armchair quarterback," a sentiment that resonated throughout our conversation.

Brian's insights into the dynamics of Las Vegas, particularly the East vs. West side narrative, provided a unique perspective on the community's evolution. He emphasized the importance of understanding local history and the stories that shape our city, which he experienced firsthand through his interactions with long-time residents and community leaders.

As we explored his legislative experience, Brian highlighted the challenges and learning curves he faced as a freshman assemblyman. He candidly discussed the complexities of navigating the political landscape, including the importance of collaboration and compromise, as demonstrated by his efforts to address collective bargaining for state employees. Despite facing setbacks, he remained focused on achieving results for his constituents, illustrating his commitment to public service.

We also touched on the pressing issues within the healthcare system, particularly the shortage of healthcare providers in both urban and rural areas of Nevada. Brian expressed his determination to advocate for solutions, such as increasing Graduate Medical Education (GME) opportunities and considering the needs of healthcare professionals' families when incentivizing them to work in underserved areas.

Throughout the episode, Brian's passion for serving his community shone through, as did his willingness to learn and adapt in his role as a legislator. This conversation not only provided valuable insights into the legislative process but also underscored the importance of active participation in our democracy. As we look ahead to the upcoming election, I hope this episode inspires listeners to engage with their communities and consider the impact of their voices in shaping the future.
