Natalie Conyer came to writing crime fiction later in life after she retired from a demanding corporate career. Her debut novel Present Tense is set in post-apartheid South Africa, where she was born, with with the main character a grizzled and complicated detective Schalk Lourens. Natalie won best debut crime fiction of the Australian Crime Writers Association’s Ned Kelly Awards with judges praising the book’s 'setting, flawed characters, and complex, taut plot’.
